چکیده

We present a detailed budget of formic and acetic acids, two of the most abundant trace gases in the atmosphere. Our bottom-up estimate of the global source of formic and acetic acids are ∼1200 and ∼1400 Gmol yr−1, dominated by photochemical oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds, in particular isoprene. Their sinks are dominated by wet and dry deposition. We use the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model to evaluate this budget against an extensive suite of measurements from ground, ship and satellite-based Fourier transform spectrometers, as well as from several aircraft campaigns over North America. The model captures the seasonality of formic and acetic acids well but generally underestimates their concentration, particularly in the Northern midlatitudes. We infer that the source of both carboxylic acids may be up to 50% greater than our estimate and report evidence for a long-lived missing secondary source of carboxylic acids that may be associated with the aging of organic aerosols. Vertical profiles Correspondence to: F. Paulot ([email protected]) of formic acid in the upper troposphere support a negative temperature dependence of the reaction between formic acid and the hydroxyl radical as suggested by several theoretical studies.

Rate Coefficients of C1 and C2 Criegee Intermediate Reactions with Formic and Acetic Acid Near the Collision Limit: Direct Kinetics Measurements and Atmospheric Implications**

Rate coefficients are directly determined for the reactions of the Criegee intermediates (CI) CH2 OO and CH3 CHOO with the two simplest carboxylic acids, formic acid (HCOOH) and acetic acid (CH3 COOH), employing two complementary techniques: multiplexed photoionization mass spectrometry and cavity-enhanced broadband ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. The measured rate coefficients are in exce...

Strong hydrogen bonding between atmospheric nucleation precursors and common organics

While atmospheric aerosols are known to contain a significant fraction of organic substances, the influence of organics on the formation of H2SO4–H2O clusters and subsequent nucleation in the atmosphere is poorly understood. In the present Letter, bonding among formic and acetic acids, sulfuric acid, ammonia and water is studied using density functional theory at PW91PW91/6-311++G(3df,3pd) leve...

Separation of Carboxylic Acids from Aqueous Solutions using Hollow Fiber Membrane Contactors

Separation of formic, acetic, and propionic acids from the aqueous stream using membrane solvent extraction has been studied using three different membrane contactors made of polysulfone (PS), polyethersulfone (PES), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) using two different solvents; including ethyl acetate (EA) and diisopropyl ether (DIPE). The efciency of the membrane and e...

Effect of Whey Permeate and Yeast Extract on Metabolic Activity of Bifidobacterium Animalis Subsp. Lactis Bb 12

In fermented products containing Bifidobacteria, factors such as organic acid concentration and b-galactosidase activity are important in the development of flavor and texture of final products. Both the process conditions and medium components have significant effects on fluctuation of such factors. The effects of whey permeate powder and yeast extract concentrations, as nitrogen sources was i...

A Large Underestimate of Formic Acid from Tropical Fires: Constraints from Space-Borne Measurements.

Formic acid (HCOOH) is one of the most abundant carboxylic acids and a dominant source of atmospheric acidity. Recent work indicates a major gap in the HCOOH budget, with atmospheric concentrations much larger than expected from known sources. Here, we employ recent space-based observations from the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer with the GEOS-Chem atmospheric model to better quantify the H...
